Chapter 16
The loud slam of my truck door signaled Kenzie's exit. Instead of spinning away like I wanted to, I sat behind the wheel until she disappeared behind the front door of the guesthouse. My gaze traveled to the top windows of the two-story building, and I wondered which one of the rooms was Kenzie's.
With a shake of my head, I threw the truck into gear and eased away from the curb. A smile stretched across my lips as I replayed most of the morning's events. One thing was certain; Kenzie had become feisty over the years. I could still see her hands planted on her hips and determination flashing in her eyes.
My smile faltered when I recalled how the tears rolled down her cheeks. Things had been intense, for sure. The way she'd looked at me just before we left the cabin had my insides twisting and I'd almostâalmostâgiven in and kissed the fight out of her.
I pulled up in front of the shop and scolded myself; I needed to stop thinking about having my mouth on her or how glorious it would be to sinkâ "You're late." Logan mocked from the sidewalk.
Purposefully, I slowly unfolded myself from the cab. "Oh wait, I have something for you," I made a show of searching through my pockets before I withdrew my hand, middle finger in the air.
Logan snorted, "Ha ha, funny."
I smiled my first genuine smile in a couple of days and took the coffee my friend held out.
"How's Kenzie doing?"
"She's probably feeling those cocktails right about now."
Logan grinned; we'd both had our fair share of hangovers. "Did you tell her that Lola spiked her drinks?"
"Nah," I shook my head and opened the lid of the coffee cup. After giving it a blow, I explained, "No need to rock a boat that don't need rockin'."
"I hear ya, man." Mrs. Henderson came crawling down the road in her husband's old Chev, both Logan and I waved as she passed us by. "What are you going to do about it?"
Brows drawn, I side-eyed my friend. "About what?"
"This thing with Lola? Clearly, there's some stuff you need to sort out."
Dragging my hand through my hair, I sighed. "Dunno." A yawn broke free, and I covered my mouth with my hand. I would've preferred my tiredness came from something other than sex dreams about my ex.
"Long night?" he asked.
"Long morning." I fell into step next to Logan and brought the to-go cup to my lips before I took a long swallow. I needed something stronger than caffeine to help me regain my focusâor rather help me forget.
"So it's like that now?" He teased when we entered the shop.
I came to an abrupt halt and glared at him. "No, it's definitely not like that." I ground my teeth together. "That woman is just soâ¦soâ¦"
"Infuriating?"
"Yes!"
"Drives you up the walls?"
"Abso-friggin-lutely."
"And all you can think about is kissing her until she sees reason?"
"Yesâ¦wait⦠No."
Logan's laughter filled the air, and by the look on his face, one would think he'd just won a prize.
